Seriously, What Is The Worst Thing That Can Happen?
My coach recently asked me a simple, yet loaded question… I’m talking as loaded as my baked potato on steak night…
“Kacie, what do you want?”
Without hesitation, I rattled off my passion list. I want to…
Support women in their businesses
Increase my capacity to serve
Become a more powerful influencer
Break free from my small-time thinking
Be a better mom
Spend more time with my husband, Mike
Grow a massive garden
At the conclusion of my peppy share moment, I did a thing.
Actually, I said a thing… the wrong thing. I pierced the desires of my heart with the spear of these three words…
“I Don’t Know.”
I’m telling you, these words will cleanse the motivation from the depths of your dreams like fingernail polish remover will strip the finish off your dining room table.
Ugh… for the love. Did I just do what I think I did? Yep, I sure did.
I not only gave fear permission, I gave that sucker the key to the front door.
And he didn’t waste any time making himself at home.
“You don’t deserve this. You aren’t capable of coaching these women. You don’t have what it takes. You’re not smart enough. You can’t manage a business AND a family. And social media… oh girl, I’m soooo gonna eat your lunch.”
And I believed those words… yep sure did. BUT only for a moment.
“Kacie, can I be real and raw with you?” my coach asked. (DISCLAIMER: I don’t really think she was “asking” for my permission… she was just being polite. Bless her heart.) “
“Why are you so afraid?”
Woah, Nellie. She got me… She really got me.
Why in the world was I so afraid of becoming who I was meant to be? What was holding me back from showing up in a space I was ready to embrace?
I will tell you why I was afraid and what was holding me back… it starts with “ch” and ends with “ange.”
Sister, I was freakin’ afraid of CHANGE and the DISRUPTION it would create in my comfy little status-quo world. Fear was holding me prisoner in a space where I felt safe, confident, content and secure and holding me back from so much more.
While there is nothing wrong with experiencing those feelings and emotions, the day you find yourself settling and stop wanting more is the day you should really be afraid.
I decided on that day, in that place, that I would not allow the fear of change and disruption to dictate my future.
Fear is a real thing. You can’t ignore it and it’s definitely not going to disappear. But you know what you can do?
You can look fear in the face, call it by name and let it fuel the fire of desire within you to be more and to do more.
Fear… he has a crafty way of persuading us to give up on the journey to our sweet spot by convincing us we have a “good reason” to do so. Darn him.
Do you want to start your own business? Do it.
Are you wanting to take an adventure of a lifetime? Go.
Are you wanting to clean up your family’s eating habits? Start today.
Are you wanting to step away from your 9 to 5? Step.
Seriously, what is the worst thing that can happen?
You try something new and it doesn’t work out exactly as you planned?
You disrupt your family’s routine, and they are uncomfortable for a little bit?
You nurture your relationships and things get better?
At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter how things turn out.
What matters is that…
… the change and disruption to your status-quo initiates growth and growth leads to goodness.
Friend, what changes and disruptions are you avoiding in the name of fear? I urge you to call fear’s bluff and make him fuel your fire, not put it out.
Do the darn thing… invite change… welcome the disruption… and experience growth like never before.
