How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome as an Entrepreneur

Imposter Syndrome – that ferocious fear you will be “found out” and exposed as a complete fraud in your area of expertise.

It’s a real thing and none of us are immune. But did you know you can actually use it to your advantage?

When you’re upside down in that imposter syndrome barrel, you feel undeserving of your achievements and are always ready to pat “luck” on the back for your successes.

This self-sabotaging bully typically rears her ugly head when you step out with authority in your field or when you say you can do something that you’ve never really done before.

I have good news and bad news.

Bad news first…

Anytime you push yourself, you can expect imposter syndrome to show up unannounced and crash your party

Now the GOOD news…

She only gets her way when you open the door and let her in.

If you aren’t pushing yourself toward growth, can you really call yourself an entrepreneur?

There will always be people ahead of you in your industry. Invariably, you will find someone else who is more visible, more influential, and more successful than you are.

But guess what? They still struggle with the lies that this master of the masquerade is determined to manipulate us into believing.

If you don’t struggle with Imposter Syndrome from time to time, you’ve become too comfortable where you are.

And the likelihood of you ever moving from that place without a little grit and grind is about as good as our “girls” resuming a perky position all by their saggy self.

Did you know ‌you can overcome this life-sucking imposter syndrome phenomena and use it to your advantage?

Don’t let Imposter Syndrome dictate whether you’ll do what you want to do and become who you want to become. Instead, flip that sucker’s agenda into something positive.

Use it as a gauge for self-reflection… and check yo’ self.

These feelings of self-doubt and inadequacy are simply an indicator you are being challenged.

And that is a good thing. You have the greatest potential to make the biggest impact when you are challenged.

Here’s the deal…

We’re all just wingin’ it. And those who “wing it” the best are doing so because they know they are wingin’ it.

And when you find yourself in this place (notice I said when, not if), resist that natural impulse to foster that imposter. Don’t patronize its deceitful attempts to distract you from your purpose and your path.

Confront those fraudulent feelings head on in the following way:

  • Find a mentor or a safe peer group you can share your feelings with.

  • Make a list of your achievements, skills, and successes and keep them in a place where you will see them many times throughout your day.

  • Surround yourself with a tribe who will give you authentic feedback that validates your efforts and results.

Wherever you feel like an imposter, remind yourself that you are worthy and capable of doing hard things.

You’re better than you think you are. You’re smarter than you give yourself credit for. And you know more than you think you do.

Remember that… and go wing it like only you can do.

Could you use an extra push… or two, with a side of genuine compassion, authentic encouragement and practical motivation? I got you.
